3 Podcast Ideas for Artists

More people listen to podcasts every day.

If you’re an artist and have been looking for a way to increase your audience, podcasting could be a great way to do just that.

It’s something you can test. See if it’s the right fit for your personality. Some people might enjoy writing for a blog or for social media.

Others might enjoy having their voice published for people to listen to. Or maybe you want to be out in front with your face as well in video form.

If you’re curious about podcasting, but not sure what the theme should be or the structure, here are a few ideas.

1. Document Your Journey

This is the reality TV approach.

You can approach it a couple different ways. You can take notes of your daily life. What you’re working on. Who you’re working with. Where you’re going. What you’re doing. Even personal things that can add a little to the story.

Then you record regular episodes going over all of that information. No real goal other than to showcase what you’re doing. People will tune in to see the progress and also to get to know you on a deeper level.

You could also record yourself all the time with audio. Then go back in and edit to create the episodes or have someone help with the editing. This would provide even more depth for your journey. It’s really like reality TV.

And you can combine the two, which many documenting series do. They have the stuff occurring in real time and also have the interviews to provide additional context.

2. Q&A

You could solicit questions from your target audience and provide the answers. This can seem basic, but it’s a great way to give the people what they want. You can even start by finding questions on social media or even in real life and go over the answers with your podcast.

3. Artist Interviews

You can interview other artists to provide some interesting podcast content for listeners. The key with this one, though, and really with the Q&A also is to make sure you’re focusing on what your audience wants to hear.

One of the traps with content marketing is to create content that you’re interested in. And that’s fine, but you’re likely going to attract other artists to the content and they probably aren’t the ones that will buy what you’re creating.

You have to focus on the buyers if your goal is to sell. Usually you can find topics and people to interview that can provide what you’re audience is looking for.

This is also a good way to showcase what others are doing. You can network in the artist community and build your audience that way.

Conclusion

There isn’t a need to start out with a full investment in podcasting. You can go low-tech with your phone and try out one or two of the ideas above. Try it for a few months. See what is working and what isn’t and if the interest is there you can then invest in some equipment like a microphone and editing software and things like that.
