Email marketing remains an important part of any online marketing strategy.
For my company, Ghost Blog Writers, I have three email lists right now.
The first is a list of clients – past and present. This email goes out every other week. It’s a way for the company to stay in touch with clients. We provide a short intro paragraph that kind of lets the customers know what’s going on in our world.
From there we share a couple of our best articles from the last couple weeks. We also share a few articles from around the web that we found interesting in recent weeks. The newsletter seems to provide value to our clients. We try to pick articles and content that will help them improve their business even if the article isn’t from us.
This strategy works to strengthen relationships with clients. The process seems to build trust, which improves longevity, loyalty and it’s even led to referrals and more business. Clients will pass the newsletter to their colleagues. And some clients will ask about more opportunity for their businesses.
The second list we have is our blog opt-in newsletter. This is more of a lead generating strategy. People that read our blog articles opt-in to this newsletter and every week they get a list of the current articles from the previous week. This keeps those prospects engaged with our brand and moving toward a trusting relationship where they will become clients in the future. This is an automated list.
The final list is one I keep for the writing team at GBW. Every month I send out a company update. It’s a way to maintain a relationship with the team, which is important for the business and for clients.
Best Day To Send Emails
As of right now these emails go out on different days of the week.
The client newsletter goes out on Tuesdays.
The blog newsletter goes out on Monday.
The team newsletter goes out on the first of the month.
I’ve had pretty good luck with Mondays and Tuesday and a new study shared on eMarketer dives into more data as to why Tuesday works well.
It turns out that the highest open rate occurs on Tuesday.
But this is not the whole story. A lot of emails go out on Tuesday. The next busiest day is Thursday, which also has the highest click rate.
The surprise, though, from the study is Friday.
Friday open rate ranks right behind Tuesday and the click rate is right behind Thursday.
Fewer emails are sent on Friday so that likely comes into play. Usually when you have a lower volume of emails sent you’ll get higher open and click rates.
But it’s interesting to think that by the end of the week that people would be kind of winding down their work week. They may not be thinking about work as much and are probably looking for a few distractions. Marketing emails provide an opportunity to do a little shopping while killing time.
That’s how it works for me anyway. I’m not sure if anyone else will cop to doing the same thing, but that’s what the data is kind of showing.
Friday, Thursday And Tuesday Are The Winners
So what’s the best day of the week to send your emails?
According to this data it might be Friday.
Not as many companies are sending email on Friday.
You stand a good chance to be seen on Fridays. From there it would make sense to send more on Thursday and Tuesday.
I might have to change the GBW strategy a bit to see if we can increase open and click rates especially with the blog newsletter email.
In fact, I’m going to switch that to Friday right now.
